چکیده

The question of how children learn what words mean is one that has long perplexed philosophers and psychologists. As Quine famously pointed out, the problem of accounting for word learning is a deep one: simply hearing a word uttered in the presence of an object tells a learner next to nothing about its meaning. Yet somehow, children learn to understand and use words correctly. How? Here, we find that learning theory offers an elegant solution to this seemingly intractable puzzle in language acquisition. To test its predictions, we administered an ambiguous word-learning task to toddlers, undergraduates and developmental psychologists. Intriguingly, while the toddlers’ performance was consistent with our hypothesis – and with the workings of general learning mechanisms that would facilitate verbal acquisition – adult performance differed markedly. These results have implications both for how our adult intutions inform the study of early language learning and for problems in secondlanguage acquisition.

Evaluating the Success of the Visual Learners in Vocabulary Learning through Word List versus Sentence Making Approaches

Thisstudy sought to evaluate the learners' achievements with the visual learning style when exposed to the sentence making and word list approaches. On that account, 45 basic level participants who studied at the Iran Language Institute (ILI), Bushehr, took part in this research study. At the outset, the learners were given Barsch learning style inventory (1991) to determine the learners' learn...

Sensitivity to sampling in Bayesian word learning.

We report a new study testing our proposal that word learning may be best explained as an approximate form of Bayesian inference (Xu & Tenenbaum, in press). Children are capable of learning word meanings across a wide range of communicative contexts. In different contexts, learners may encounter different sampling processes generating the examples of word-object pairings they observe. An ideal ...

Approach to Word Problem Solving in Students with Specific Learning Disorders: A Review Study

Background and Objective: Today, different teaching approaches have been offered to solve word problems. Schema-based instruction is one of these new approaches. This study aimed to identify and determine the nature, stages, research evidence, and effectiveness of schema-based instruction on resolving students’ word problems. Materials and Methods: This is a review study. Studies and resources...
